The name of the topic tonight is Perseverance. I though about this tonight as I was watching a movie with my kids, called Cool Runnings. Now I don’t know if anyone that is reading this has seen that movie or not or even know the story behind it, but I’ll share just in case.

It’s based on the true story of the first Jamaican bobsled team in the Olympics. It’s about a group of guys, one in particular who wanted so bad to go to the Olympics, but lost out when he was tripped during the qualifying race. So him and three others come together in a strange way with a character played by John Candy. This movie is great when it comes to showing the true meaning of perseverance and how important it is for us as individuals to not give up.

In the movie the team runs into multiple obstacles:

1. Money: they needed money to go to the qualifying races
2. Lack of faith: by people in their country
3. Ridicule: from the other teams in the qualifying races.
4. The elements: the cold, running on ice, the whole thing
5. Poor equipment: they got an old bobsled and yet they still managed to do pull it off.
6: The Olympics: They got disqualified because again, everyone thought they were a joke, an embarrassment
7. Their own differences: they had to really learn to come together as a team
8. Social Pressure: They were so focused on being like others, they forgot to just be themselves. They had to over come that.
But I think the most amazing thing ever was what happened during a run. They had a run, everything was going well, when their sled lost a bolt and caused the to wipe out. They slid all the way down the run and at the bottom you see the emergency team rushing to them. Then you hear these words:
“We have to finish the race.”
They had two choices…they all could have given up, let it go and no one would blamed them or they could have seen it through. They got up and they picked up that sled and they carried it all the way to the finish line. And you know what? Everyone, including those who didn’t support them, clapped and cheered for them.

That’s true and real perseverance, making the decision to see what you are doing through to the end. These guys, they had every reason in the world to give up, but they didn’t. They had everything working against them, but they kept going. They had passion for what they wanted, they had a dream that they shared and they had a desire to see it through. All that hard work they did to get to that point, they could have thrown it all away because they let fear take a hold. They could have listened to all the people saying they couldn’t do it,  because they thought they were ridiculous.

But they didn’t. They didn’t let society dictate what they were going to and could do. Instead they fought and they pushed forward and when they were told no, they kept pushing and in the end they got what they wanted.

We have to choose to persevere in our lives, we will have obstacles and we will have plenty of things like this standing in our way. People who will doubt us, who will think we are crazy, they may even laugh at us. We can let them tell us what we are good for, tear down our dreams and our desires for ourselves or we can fight back and show them that we can do it.

When things look hard or get hard, don’t give up. Remember what it is you are doing and focus on it. Don’t listen to those who would tear you down, instead of  supporting you. Don’t let people tell you that you are wrong, wasting your time or living in a dream world. If it matters to you, if it truly matters to you…then go after it and don’t stop till you get it! You can’t give up, because it gets hard. You can’t give up, because people don’t get it. You have to keep pushing.

There is no failure in trying, there is only failure in not trying. So don’t give up, don’t allow excuses to get in your way…keep going!! And PERSEVERE!!!

Brightest Blessings!
