Past vs the Future

So many times I have heard over how our past affects our future or how it determines our future.

Well that is both true and false. Our past can only affect our future, if we choose to let it, because it can either make us or break us. If we choose to let our past make us better, it can have a positive effect on our future. This can happen because we may strive to work harder, climb higher, be more positive, forgive easily and be less stressed. If we choose to let it break us, it can have a negative effect on our future, by making us miserable, lonely, defensive, paranoid, we may even give up and not try. So to say that the past affects our future, is partly true and partly false.

However it does NOT determine our future. Only we determine that, by the choices we make in life.

So many times we get caught up in the past, how this happened or that happened. Where we came from, what happened to make us hurt. We focus on all of that as if doing so we can change what happened in the past, but here’s the thing…you can’t change the past.

For instance, let’s say someone does something bad to you when you were younger, but you can’t remember. If you spend your whole life trying to figure out what it was, trying to remember what that person did to you, then you will never have a future. You will always and forever be stuck in the past. Sometimes you have to let it go. You can’t live your life, if you are always looking over your shoulder or trying to figure out what it was that person did to you. You can either choose to let it go, find happiness and move on with making your life worth living. Or you can choose to remain focused on, what happened, who you were and what that person did to you and forever be trapped in the past.

If we are to busy living in the past, then we can’t live in the present and we can’t have a future. No amount of time or energy will change the events of our past, the past is over, that’s why it’s called the past. It can’t be relived, it can’t happen again. We can’t go back and change anything, we can’t go back and fix things. We can only move forward.

The point I am trying to make here is that the past is the past, but what our life is like, what our future is like, that is up to us. We have choices to make all the time. How our past affects us, is our choice. It can make us strong or make us weak. If we aren’t living for today, then we aren’t as strong as we think we might be. If we are to busy focusing on the past, then we will miss what the future has to offer us. You can not, I repeat, you can NOT live in the past and in the future. You have to live in one or the other. You have to choose. You have to let one go. You can’t change the past, so why not let it go. Instead of letting go of your future, which you haven’t even made yet.

You can’t truly live, if you remain stuck in the past. You have to let go of the past, set your sights for bigger and better things in the future and start living. Make the decision that what ever happened in your past isn’t going to stop you from obtaining you dreams. Make the decision that you will become stronger by moving forward, rather then staying in one place. Remember you only live once. So live life fully, build an amazing future. Don’t let your past control you and keep you from becoming all that you can be and all that you can do.

Brightest Blessings!
